When considering where to camp with your kids, consider these five summer vacation spots that are perfect for family fishing, boating, and fun family camping.
Wagon Trail Campground, Door County Wisconsin
This idyllic 75 acre summer getaway is the northernmost private campsite on Wisconsin’s breathtaking Door County Peninsula. Located 80 miles north of Green Bay on Lake Michigan, the Wagon Trail is the perfect summer vacation for families outdoors. There’s a mix of 145 tent and RV sites, plus cabin, caravan, and yurt rentals to cater for all camping needs, bait and fishing rod rentals, and a fish cleaning table with a freezer for your catch. Within an easy hike is the Mink River Estuary, where the river of the same name and Lake Michigan together form this pristine freshwater estuary, one of the last of its kind in America. There you can put your canoe or kayak in the water for an unforgettable family camping experience in the Midwest.
Steinberg Park, Georgia
Less than 20 minutes from the heart of downtown Atlanta is Georgia’s answer to the question, “Where to camp to escape the rigors of city life?” Stone Mountain Park offers yurts on the lake as well as hundreds of more traditional tent and RV sites. Located in the park’s East Lake area is the REI Boathouse, which is where campers enjoying one of their best family summer vacations can rent kayaks, set up paddle boards, canoes and pedal boats. Or take your private boat to catch the bass, carp, crappie, catfish, and bream swimming in the lake.
Salton Sea State Recreation Area, California
One of the most unique summer vacation spots in America is also one of the largest inland seas and lowest places on earth, 238 feet below sea level. The Mecca beach campsite here is popular with campers, boaters, and anglers looking to catch tilapia, the only fish to survive these salty waters – but at least you don’t have to season it for dinner – while camping in California with their family. The sea, which is now 25% salty than the sea, offers great conditions for kayaking for your family even during the summer vacation!
Lake Ana State Park, Virginia
Located near the center of the Richmond, Charlottesville, Washington DC triangle is this charming state park with a beach on one of Virginia’s signature lakes. Don’t forget to pack your fishing rods when consulting our family camping checklist as there is a two hectare pond specially designed for family fishing thanks to easy access for children and the disabled. There’s also a boat launch to go out on the lake and catch largemouth bass, crappie, bream, and other freshwater fish. Family camping on Lake Ana is offered in tents or in one of six cabins, two six-bedroom lodges, and ten two-bedroom cabins.
Garner State Park, Texas
This is the most popular state park for camping in all of Texas, and it’s easy to see why it’s a popular summer vacation spot for residents of the Lone Star State. Located 90 minutes west of San Antonio, the 3.9 mile long Frio River, which meanders through 1,774 acres of scenic Hill Country property, is prime kayaking, tubing, or boating property on one of your family summer vacation deep in the heart of Texas. The park rents kayaks so you don’t have to worry about bringing your own. However, when writing your family camping checklist be sure to include fishing poles and bait to pull big mouth bass, bluegill, and rainbow trout out of the frio!
